BLT - Vegan Style!

Vegan BLT's with fakin bacon!

Before we get into how to make this deliciousness, let me start by stating the obvious - No, this does not taste like real bacon.  Why would it? It's made from tofu not from cute little pigs with feelings.

Now even though it doesn't taste like actual bacon, it is a great substitute for a hearty BLT sandwich and no one was harmed in the making of it so you can enjoy it without a second thought.

As we go into this recipe, you'll see Liquid Smoke as one the ingredients. If you've never used this before, it will change your life! This is what gives the smokey "meaty" flavor in this bacon or in my seitan steaks. It smells so good, but it is strong so don't decide to go heavy handed on that one. You can find it at the regular grocery store in the aisle with the BBQ sauces. Here we go!

Ingredients:
Firm Tofu
1/2 Cup Soy Sauce
1/4 Cup Liquid Smoke
1/4 Cup Oil (any kind with neutral flavor)
2 Tbsp Balsamic Vinegar

To Build the Sandwich:
Bread, lettuce, tomato, avocado, dairy free cheese, vegan mayonnaise

Process:

To begin, you need to first freeze the block of tofu. Freezing the tofu gives it a tougher, more porous texture that is perfect for mock meats. Make sure it's frozen solid. You can then defrost it overnight in the refrigerator or in the microwave for 8-10 minutes. Once defrosted, you'll need to slice the tofu in thin slices. I actually like to slice it when it's still a little frozen because I can get cleaner slices. Put the slices on a paper towel and press out any liquid that might still be hanging on. You want it as dry as possible.

Next, in a dish, combine the rest of the ingredients: soy sauce, Liquid Smoke, oil, and balsamic vinegar. Place the strips of tofu in the dish, making sure the liquid coats the tofu. Place in the refrigerator to marinate for at least 10 minutes. You can pre-heat the oven to 375 degrees while it's marinating.

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place the tofu in a single layer on the paper. Bake for 15 minutes, flip them, and bake for 15 minutes more.

And voila! You have yourself some fakin bacon! Toast your bread and build your sandwich with your favorite veggies. I like to use Chao Original Creamy Cheese Slices, avocado, lettuce and tomatoes.
You're going to love it!
Enjoy!
